Since the 1980’s, we’ve been concerned about the decline of our coral reefs. Scientists are working vigorously to find the cause, slow the decline, and save the reefs.
We thought we’d never lose the reefs, but in the past 30 years, we’ve lost 50% of them. In a rapid and devastating wave, we’re shocked to see this ecosystem that supports a quarter of all marine life become zombies.
Corals are projected to all disappear by 2050.
That is if we don’t know the cause. If we can’t do anything about it.
Scientists have been focusing on rising temperatures as the cause, but that doesn’t explain a lot of what has been happening.
There have been localized extinctions, no recovery, no recruitment, behavioral and developmental abnormalities… things that are highly unusual and really scaring scientists.
There has a been a third factor, largely ignored, that is the greatest immediate and persistent threat to our coral reefs, a threat that guarantees their extinction, and cripples their ability to ever recover. They’re drowning in it every day.
That threat: oxybenzone.
The bans are happening, but the information isn’t out yet in a clear way.
It takes a lot to understand oxybenzone and the full range of effects it has.
