Coral polyps are tiny animals. While living, they secrete a limestone skeleton forming what we call coral. They’re actually transparent.

Symbiotic zooxanthellae, tiny photosynthetic algae, live inside the polyps tissues, giving them the energy to grow and form corals, and later reefs, as well as their color.
